Step 1: An artist with a through knowledge of historic antique lace will design the lace as it will be in its finished size.
Step 2: This design is enlarged six times by a technical designer. This enlargement allows each stitch to be seen precisely. The technical designer is paid on the basis of the number of stitches per design. New Beginnings "Victorian Splendor" handkerchief style HQA consists of over 86,000 stitches.
Step 3: Using a pantograph machine, which guides the embroidery machine, the sticher follows the enlarged lace pattern. The accuracy of his hand determines the out come of the various lace effects on the finished product. Guided by the pantograph, the embroidery machine stitches the lace onto a silk "support" fabric.
Step 4: The lace pieces still on the silk support fabric are fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle. It requires a highly skilled operator to sew the parts together in such a way as to make the lace appear to be of one piece. Step 5: The cotton lace is then sewn onto the linen handkerchief center.
Step 6: The supporting silk fabric is now no longer needed. The handkerchief is put into a chemical bath or burning bath which dissolves the silk but leaves the cotton lace. Step 7: The handkerchief is then hand ironed while still wet from the"burning bath."
Step 8: Now the linen center is trimmed by hand and any loose threads are trimmed away.
Step 9: Each handkerchief is then inspected for flaws which will be mended by hand, to give these exceptional handkerchiefs a perfect appearance.
